TudbuT: Getting to the point
Starting the conversationWhenever you DM someone, please do not simply say "Hello, how are you? I have a question."
This will drive people like me crazy, especially when we live in different timezones. When I get DM'd like this, I get very annoyed, because when I reply with something like "Sure, feel free to ask!", it sometimes takes up to a day until I get the actual question and can answer it.
This wastes a ton of time, because if my conversation partner had simply asked the question before waiting, I could've immediately responded. It is not impolite to immediately ask your question. Rather, it makes the conversation much simpler and faster.
Asking for help with a problem
Adding to this, i sometimes get messages like "X doesn't work. Please help me ASAP." and I think it's obvious why this is a problem: I can't solve a problem if I don't know any of the details. There are thousands of ways in which X could malfunction or refuse to work. I need a description of what went wrong, what you tried to do, what happened instead, and the log files if there are any. If I don't have those, I won't even know what part of X isn't working!
A combination of these two can sometimes result in weeks of conversation at a rate of 2 messages a day, because timezones suck; So please:
Doing it right: An example
Bob:
Hello!
Bob:
I have a problem with TTC: Whenever I open the GUI, the entire game crashes.
Attachment:
latest.log
3 hours later
Me:
Hello! I will fix this problem as soon as possible! In the meantime, I suggest changing your config file to this:
Attachment:
main.cfg
7 hours later
Bob:
Thanks! I didn't even have to use the config because the update was already available. The problem is fixed now!
Even if the next answer only happens after a few hours, there is much less back-and-forth between us and the problem is resolved in minimal time with minimal frustration.
